Chelsea are losing out after £47m Liverpool transfer decision vindicated Jürgen Klopp choice

It hasn’t been the best couple of years for Chelsea striker Timo Werner. The German forward joined The Blues in the summer of 2020 for a colossal fee, with RB Leipzig receiving some £47m for his services.

But as is the Chelsea way when signing expensive strikers not named Didier Drogba, Werner struggled to match the goal tally he notched up in the Bundesliga.

Werner has scored a paltry 10 Premier League goals since joining, and just a total of 23 in all competitions across the two campaigns. Werner hasn’t performed badly for Chelsea, per se. He’s provided nearly as many assists as he has goals, with 21 across the two years.

But yet, it seems there won’t be a third season at Stamford Bridge. Werner gave an interview recently in which he stated that he wasn’t exactly happy with how things are going in west London.

"The manager always has different ideas, different thoughts and what you need in different games," said Werner.

"In many games I was not in his thoughts so I try to change that. It is not different to last season, it was the same when Romelu [Lukaku] came. We had big, big competition. It’s still the same.

"At a big club like Chelsea you have that competition. In pre-season, you can show that you want to play, that you are a guy who wants to be in the starting XI. That’s what I try."

Thomas Tuchel was later asked about his striker’s comments. "I’m surprised," Tuchel said when asked about Werner’s comments. "I would be very happy as a young guy having a contract at Chelsea Football Club. I would be one of the happiest people on the planet."
