Report: Player Liverpool planning bid for could now join Manchester City
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool now look set to miss out on the signing of Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
The Sunday Mirror (5/6; page 73) reported that Liverpool were going to try to sign Phillips from Leeds after missing out on Aurelien Tchouameni to Real Madrid.
The Merseyside club were reportedly planning to make a move for the England international midfielder.
Sport subsequently reported that Liverpool had given up signing Barcelona midfielder Gavi and were ‘negotiating for’ Phillips.
LEEDS UNITED TARGET KALVIN PHILLIPS TO JOIN MANCHESTER CITY
However, it now seems that Liverpool will not be able to sign the 26-year-old England international midfielder this summer.
The Athletic are reporting today that Manchester City have reached an agreement with Leeds for the signing of Phillips.
The Englishman is now ‘moving closer to a transfer’ to the Etihad Stadium, according to the report.
City will reportedly pay Leeds an initial transfer fee of £42 million with potential bonuses valuing £3 million for Phillips.
MISSING OUT
In our view, Kalvin Phillips would make Manchester City a better and stronger team in the middle of the season.
That would enhance City’s chances of winning the Premier League title next season, which would be a blow to Liverpool’s chances of reclaiming the trophy.
