Report: Klopp's staff blown away by star in Liverpool training, he wants out of Anfield
Toward the start of the summer transfer window, the Reds powerhouse revealed that he was ready to quit the Anfield outfit.
That’s because Phillips spent the second half of last season on loan at Bournemouth, helping them to Premier League promotion, after barely kicking a ball during the first half of the campaign.
Bear in mind that the 25-year-old played a massive role in helping Liverpool qualify for the Champions League in May of 2021, following an injury crisis which derailed Jurgen Klopp’s side in an enormous way.
So to go from being a big player to barely even making the squad must’ve been disappointing for the towering defender and the same would’ve been true when he failed to get a transfer away during the summer.
However, The Athletic have reported that Phillips’s attitude and application in training have been noted by Klopp and his staff members at Kirkby and they know he’ll continue to be professional despite frustrations.
You can’t blame Phillips for wanting to leave Liverpool.
Once Ibrahima Konate is fit again the Bolton-born defender is going to be Klopp’s fifth-choice option in central defence once again.
And as Klopp will tell you, he certainly deserves regular Premier League football, albeit with somebody else because despite being fifth choice, that’s where he should be.
However, that’s more a reflection on the ridiculous options that Liverpool already have, rather than it be a reflection on Phillips.
