Jurgen Klopp was spotted training alongside Nat Phillips during Liverpool’s latest session in Austria.
As seen on LFCTV’s Inside Training video, Klopp took the opportunity to fire a few short passes back and forth with Phillips.
Going off his right foot and then his left, the boss grins as he sends the ball into the defender’s feet.
Not wanting to be shown up, Phillips allows for a few passes before turning away and heading back to the session. Looking good boss, talk about squad depth!
Klopp’s talents lie away from the pitch
It’s nice to see Klopp getting involved with the players. Perhaps in another life he and Phillips could have been an old school centre-back partnership together.
In terms of his footballing ability though, he was never anywhere close to hitting the heights of any of his current squad. As a result, he deserves all the more credit for commanding such talented players with ease.
Unlike his seemingly eternal rival Pep Guardiola, he didn’t have a career at the top of the game.
The man who defeated him in the Champions League final in May – Carlo Ancelotti – was also a distinguished player. Premier League rivals Antonio Conte and Mikel Arteta played at a much higher level than Klopp, too.
Jurgen has made that utterly irrelevant, though. Like his successor at Borussia Dortmund, Thomas Tuchel, he has shown that it’s possible for lower-level players to get right to the very top of the game after retiring.
As for Phillips, he unfortunately may as well be training with Klopp at this point. He could train with the kit man, a group of passers by, or the best players in the squad and he’d still have the same chance of playing this season.
Liverpool are reportedly still undecided as to what to do with him in the remaining weeks of the transfer window. They’d previously put a £15m asking price on his head, but as the weeks go on, it looks less and less likely that they’ll be able to fetch that kind of fee.
