Report: Recent Liverpool mastermind unlikely to follow Potter to Chelsea despite holding talks

Chelsea want Michael Edwards but the former Liverpool mastermind is set to dodge a move to Stamford Bridge once again.

A dramatic calendar year for Chelsea has just taken another turn.

From the Roman Abramovich fallout to the Todd Boehly takeover and then a summer spending spree, you’d think Chelsea had made enough headlines for one year.

Manager Thomas Tuchel has gone and has been quickly replaced by Graham Potter after Boehly raided Brighton and Hove Albion.

Boehly and co aren’t done there though as they want to add a director of football.

Chelsea want to go down a different route than in recent times and now want a proven director to go in and work alongside new boss Potter.

Unsurprisingly, one of the names high on Boehly’s list is that of Michael Edwards.

The former Portsmouth and Tottenham Hotspur man became famous for being the mastermind behind Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side.

Edwards not only oversaw some truly incredible signings at Anfield but also raked in huge money for players that were barely getting a kick at Liverpool.

Edwards decided to leave Liverpool earlier this year and is now one of the hottest properties on the market from a recruitment standpoint.

The Daily Mail now suggest that talks have been held between Chelsea and Edwards but he has asked for more time before he comes back into the game.

Edwards spent 10 years working at Liverpool in various high-level job so now feels he needs some time to recharge his batteries.

An appointment is expected soon and with Edwards seemingly turning down this latest approach as he takes a break from football, Boehly’s dream move seems to be dead in the water.

That means a move for ex-Tottenham and RB Leipzig man Paul Mitchell is a possibility; he is currently sporting director at Monaco.

Liverpool fans will just be delighted that Edwards isn’t heading to a Premier League rival.

Seeing Edwards mastermind another club’s transfer business – with the aim of leapfrogging the Reds in the Premier League and in Europe – would have been hard to take.
