Report: Liverpool target left out of pre-season trip, £55m exit now seems very likely
According to The Athletic, Leeds have left Raphinha out of their pre-season trip to Australia, with Liverpool interested in the Premier League star.
WHAT’S THE STORY?
Well, the Brazilian now looks very likely to leave Elland Road.
Jesse Marsch has already signed a replacement in Luis Sinisterra, which means Raphinha is now free to join a new club.
Aside from Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Barcelona are also interested in the 25-year-old, according to The Athletic.
Interestingly, Chelsea have already had a £55m bid accepted by Leeds, although Raphinha is personally holding out for a move to Barcelona, his preferred destination.
However, it is not that simple.
Barcelona are currently struggling financially, so despite the winger’s desire to join them, they may not actually be able to match Chelsea’s offer.
Interest in the South American comes after he scored 11 goals in 35 Premier League appearances for Leeds last season, as he helped the Whites narrowly avoid relegation to the Championship.
LIVERPOOL NEED RAPHINHA
In our view, Raphinha should be a priority target for Jürgen Klopp.
Why do we think that? Well, the Reds are admittedly looking strong in attack with the likes of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah, although they need to replace those who provide backup to the main cast.
Liverpool have already lost Sadio Mane, Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino, three players who were crucial in helping Klopp keep their quadruple hopes alive right up until the final day of the season.
Of course, Nunez should provide some goals, but the Uruguayan alone cannot be expected to replace the efforts of three players – nor can Fabio Carvalho, who we presume will spend this season simply bedding in at Anfield.
With Raphinha free to leave, and the £55m asking price clear, Liverpool must make a serious push for Raphinha if Barcelona cannot stump up the cash during their financial crisis.
