Liverpool£70,000 a-week star reacts to Real Madrid interest

Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez says he was flattered by transfer rumours with Real Madrid, however, says his priority was always signing a new deal with the Reds after agreeing a deal earlier last week.

The defender signed new deal before the Reds headed out to Thailand and Singapore for the Asian leg of their pre-season tour and he will remain at Anfield until 2027.

Gomez first joined the Merseyside Reds back in 2015 when Jurgen Klopp’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers was at the helm, and made his first few games for the team as a left-back. Since then, though, he has predominantly appeared as a defender, and was a crucial part of the team which claim the Premier League title in 2020, playing 28 games.

The 25-year-old defender before signing a new deal with Liverpool was linked with a switch Real Madrid.

‘I can’t dispute I heard about these rumours, but until things are concrete with my representatives, I take it all with a pinch of salt, he told the Liverpool ECHO. ‘Any interest is flattering.

‘But I don’t really see it like as that much of a distraction because until I make my decision, the external noise is just that – external. Once I got my head around what I wanted to do, my signing is me understanding the challenge and wanting to rise to it.”
