Romano says ‘Real Madrid were really interested’ in Liverpool 23-year-old, but it was impossible

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has done a deep-dive on the deal that saw Darwin Nunez come to Liverpool.

Nunez joining Liverpool has been one of the most high-profile signings of the summer so far, and, as we know, the Reds beat some hefty competition to sign the Uruguayan.

Indeed, Manchester United were strongly linked to Nunez at the time, but now, Romano has claimed that Real Madrid were also in for the striker.

Romano shared what he knows about Madrid’s interest in the forward.

“It was not easy guys. Why? Because I want to reveal to you that Real Madrid were really interested after missing out on the Kylian Mbappe deal,” Romano said.

“One of the strikers wanted by Real Madrid was Darwin Nunez, but it was not possible from a passport point of view, because Darwin has no European passport and with Real Madrid it would not be possible to register Darwin Nunez if they found an agreement with Benfica, so it was impossible to complete that negotiation.”

Could you imagine if Madrid had beaten Liverpool to Nunez? That would have been adding insult to injury for the Reds.

Indeed, Madrid have been a thorn in Liverpool’s side all summer long.

First they beat them in the Champions League final, then they beat them to Aurelien Tchouameni’s signature, and then, they tried to snatch Nunez away from them.

Luckily for the Reds, La Liga registration rules came to the rescue, and eventually, Liverpool got their man.
