Report: 20-year-old defender is now in demand and Liverpool will get 15% of the transfer fee
Liverpool stand to benefit from a sell-on clause as teams look to buy Ki-Jana Hoever from Wolves. The Reds sold the player in 2020.
The Athletic reported last week that Ajax hope to sign Ki-Jana Hoever from Wolves. That could just be a loan deal but there’s potential for a permanent move, too. And now it appears they’re not the only Dutch giants looking at the defender.
Voetbal international claim that PSV Eindhoven like the look of Hoever. The club is talking internally about making an approach to Wolves.
And that’s all good news for Liverpool. The Reds are the ones who sold Hoever to Wolves, of course, sending him that way as they signed Diogo Jota in 2020. The Athletic covered the details at the time – £9m upfront, £4.5m in add-ons and, importantly, a 15% sell-on clause.
It’s very hard to tell how much Hoever would move for and how much Liverpool get in return. On the one hand, he’s a versatile 20-year-old defender with 20 games of Premier League experience under his belt.
Such a player would usually command a decent fee – certainly above what Wolves paid for him.
On the other hand, the big story surrounding Hoever last season was his manager, Bruno Lage, publicly criticising his work ethic. Teams now know that Wolves don’t value the player all that highly and his value will tank as a result.
What’s certain, though, is that competition between PSV and Ajax will drive that price up again. Liverpool will just hope that it goes high enough to add a significant chunk of cash into their reserves.
They’ve got a big-money move to fund, after all, as Darwin Nunez prepares to join the club. While there are already plans in place to help fund that, Liverpool will welcome every pound they can.
